she fell in love in the first place

For the life of me, I cannot remember
What made us think that we were wise
And we'd never compromise
For the life of me, I cannot believe
We'd ever die for these sins
We were merely freshmen

[She smiles and rubs her thumb against the top of his snout as he presses his nose against her palm, gently patting his head afterwards. Now and then, she tried to assert herself as being able to cover her part of the patrol on her own, but to be honest, it was comforting having him there. She liked knowing that he was always nearby, looking out for her.]

I haven't found anything yet. It seems pretty quiet. What about you?

That's good.

[They had never needed a translator, not even when she had been small and new to the family. She always understood him perfectly. Whether it was because of her heightened sensitivity to the supernatural or simply because of the deep bond they had formed early on was unclear, but it didn't matter. The result was the same.]

Things have been quiet lately. I should probably be relieved that things are peaceful, but it makes me nervous.

[What does she think? Well. Always nice to know he values her opinion. She looks thoughtfully out towards the woods, frowning a little as she considers what this extended period of quiet might mean. Calm before the storm? Maybe. She hoped not -- but it did seem to be a little too good to be true.

Beacon Hills was aptly named. It seemed to be a beacon for the supernatural sometimes. A giant Bat-signal that said "all things weird and wild, come on over."]

I think we should be careful. I think we should be extra thorough with our patrols, just in case. I don't like it. Not to fall back on an old cliche, but it really has been too quiet. Almost like the woods are waiting for something.

[Even at this age? Her gut was almost never wrong.]

I don't think there's anything out here tonight.

[The air was still. She couldn't sense any disturbances. She wasn't psychic, exactly, but sometimes it felt close enough. Enough that her hunches were always worth working from.]

But we should be wary. Maybe do a couple of sweeps in shifts over the next couple of nights.

[She smiles, knowing that howl well, and leans in to hug him around his neck, burying her face in his fur. She had done it often as a child for comfort, and had chosen not to grow out of the habit.]

Home.

[Words were rarely ever necessary. She released him and began to amble down the path that would lead them out to the edge of the woods and, shortly thereafter, bring them home.]

I'm thinking we're due for an after-patrol snack.
