Necromancer and healer

[personal profile] fullcowl 2016-09-30 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
[Izuku has a little corner store a few blocks away from his apartment. It's not well known, despite the big sign that says "Midoriya Necromancy" in as friendly a font as he could find. But then necromancy isn't considered a friendly branch of magic when compared to almost anything else. Raising the dead is dangerous, it's taboo- but there are things that are simpler than humans, and much less worrying. Much less exhausting to do long term as well.

That's what Izuku specializes in. Bringing back pets and plants, anything small and that wouldn't be too difficult to breathe life back into. Despite so few people knowing about and using his services, there's a small, loyal bunch of customers. He sees some people to revive their goldfish, some for their plants.

Without fail he sees Shouto at least once a week for his plants. (He's starting to wonder if Shouto's just here for the company.) Today is one of those days as he sits at his table with his laptop.]

Is that a new plant?

[ After having his father try to stuff necromancy down his throat as a kind of magic he should learn - along with other, equally taboo arts that he's known for - Shouto had decided he wanted basically nothing to do with it. So he learned the more reasonable skills, the far less illegal ones, just to spite him and to make his mother proud.

For the most part, it's meant that he's wanted absolutely nothing to do with necromancers. They're all of a type.

Unfortunately, he effectively sucks at taking care of plants. Because his mother still has troubles sometimes - disassociation, shaking hands, attacks that wrack both mind and body - he tries to help her with the plants that she's allowed to keep in her hospital room. Brings her new ones to brighten up the room. He... he isn't very good at it.

Midoriya Izuku is the exception to the necromancer rule, and can help when he fails to keep them alive for long. (He's starting to come to terms with the fact he's not trying very hard to keep them alive, although he hopes Izuku hasn't cottoned on yet.)

He looks down at the recently deceased potted hyacinth in his hands, flatly exasperated and sheepish in a way that only Shouto can accomplish.

It was.

I can see that.

[Izuku's the type to put two and two together quickly enough, and this has happened often. He's a little suspicious, but business is business. It's never too hard to get a plant back. Still, if he comes back next week Izuku's going to give him some hardier plant advice.

For now though, he'll rise and take the flower pot out of Shouto's hands.]

It's good of you to keep trying.

[Even if a part of him feels a little sorry for these poor flowers. Honestly, how does Shouto keep making them die? Izuku's the one with a close relationship with death and his houseplants never seem this bad off.

It takes him a few moments to coax the flower back to life. A bit of his own magic, a few words and it's back, perfectly healthy and alive.]

I honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong. [ As someone that works so hard, spends so much time practicing with his own craft, has had if it's not perfect, do it again drilled into him since childhood, Shouto... has literally tried everything to keep the plants alive. But he has no knack for plant manipulation. No proficiency in herbology. He doesn't even have a green thumb.

He's a healer, for god's sake, and he still ruthlessly murders plants regularly.

He watches Izuku work, expression a little dour. It would be nice if he stopped killing his mother's plants? At least she thinks his attempts are endearing or something. She always smiles and teases him when a plant starts drooping under his care.
]

It's not like I'm going out of my way to kill them.

Not everyone has the talent for plants. [He hands the hyacinth back after double checking that it's stable and will stay that way. He leaves a little extra spark of magic in it, it should last at least another week.

Izuku doesn't keep that many plants himself, just a few cacti that sit in the windowsill of his apartment. They seem content there and they're simple enough to take care of, some sun, some water- happy plants.]

You're an excellent healer and you should take pride in that. Don't worry, you're not the only one who comes in for plants. [Even if he is the most frequent visitor.]

[ Accepting the plant back, Shouto heaves a quiet but still heavy sigh, looking down at the bane of his existence. At least Izuku is good to talk to, doesn't maintain the stereotype of being maniacal the way so many other necromancers he's met do. True, there are more reclusive ones, the ones that just want to keep to themselves, but Izuku is a bright spot in the taboo magic.

And he has a happy plant in his hands. He can feel the magic in it, the trace that is undeniably Izuku.
]

A healer probably shouldn't be killing things, even if it's plants. [ Even Fuyumi teases him about it, and it's her. ] I appreciate you bringing them back, though.

[ A lot. ]

[Even under Shouto's care it should be fine for a week. It's not like he minds a frequent visitor, the shop gets lonely when nobody comes in. Necromancers have a reputation, but just because a lot of them are evil doesn't mean they all are. Izuku's sure that every magic has a way to be helpful, even if it's not necessarily the usual way people use it.

Necromancy has it's perks, reuniting pet owners with their beloved animals. Rescuing plants from people with brown thumbs- even when they'd like to have green ones. He can make that happen for the low, low price of a spark of his magic and coaxing them back from the dead.]

Well... No, probably not. But you can't help what you're bad at when it comes to magic.

My shop is always open to you, Todoroki-kun. If you just want to stop by to chat, that's fine too.

[ Given the fact that Izuku is the only necromancer that Shouto has any interactions with willingly, let alone associates with, he knows that there's the exception to every rule. He's biased, though, given the other reason why he keeps coming here despite the fact he doesn't always have to.

He looks down at the plant in his hands, narrowing his eyes a little at it like it's personally spited him. As if he hasn't bought a bunch of plants just to see which one will die first so that he can take it to Midoriya Izuku's shop, though.
]

No, I suppose not. [ He sighs, but then goes still with that. Ah, busted, probably. ] ... I'd say that I wouldn't want to impose, but I've been here often enough that I know all of your regulars.

[The plant hasn't done anything but try to quietly live its life, Shouto. Don't look a the poor thing like that.

He chuckles as he watches Shouto interact with his plant.]

I have extra room, I don't think anybody would question you if you wanted to stop by. Besides, it can get a little lonely when nobody needs my services.
