[ Ever since he was little, Tadano Itsuki has wanted to help people. It's hard to get past nerves to do this, but he's nothing if not determined - always has been - so when it comes to academy training, he throws himself headfirst into it with all he's got. His mother worries for him, as all mothers do when their children decide to take up what can oftentimes be a dangerous profession, but she encourages him. His father claps him on the shoulder, proud and just as supportive, and they're both in the crowd when he's accepted into the Tokyo Police Department as an officer, after graduating in the top of his class.
Which is probably why his relationship with Narumiya Mei eats at him constantly for a while.
As a romantic at heart, Itsuki believes in love at first sight.
He also believes that maybe it would have made his life easier if he had not fallen in love with a billionaire who stole from other rich people for the thrill of it, like an adrenaline junkie standing on the edge of the precipice.
He certainly would've turned him in ages ago, when he'd put two and two together, the figure in the near-catsuit strikingly familiar in swagger to the blond man in the sleek suit. (Nevermind the flirting, god.) But here they are, dealing with a string of robberies that just keep happening and happening, one after the other. They've recovered a lot of the stolen goods, sure, but the fact he has to apologize for their shortcomings and play a game of fetch for the people that have suffered the thefts is a little... stressful, and irritating, when he knows who's stolen them.
So he shows up, without an appointment, and without calling Mei in advance. While determined to do something about all of this, he flusters a little when the receptionist sends him a wink and a smile, paging him in without even asking why he's there.
All she says is into the intercom is: ] Narumiya-san, your boyfriend's here to see you.
[ narumiya mei lives a pretty good life. he's absolutely filthy rich, a billionaire who created an empire from his days as a pitcher in the NPB to now, the ceo of a rich and successful company and the darling of the city that he lives in. mei could have anything he wanted--girls, boys, material things anything--with a check and a wink.
instead, he takes those things a different way--he steals them.
mei started stealing for shits and giggles, and continues to do so. it's not the things he's interested in, but rather, the thrill of it all. he steals jewelry and returns it a few days later, throws lavish galas at his mansion and brings the cops straight to them. mei loves to flirt with danger, and with itsuki tadano, who tends to be the very definition of the word. not really--itsuki is sweet and kind and goofy and the opposite of mei in almost every single way--but he's a cop.
the very cop assigned to mei's case.
if itsuki knows, mei doesn't know it, nor does he really care. he hasn't tried to turn him in, so mei continues merrily dancing on that line. he's been sleeping with itsuki for months, takes him on dates, and then causes all of his headaches at night (and probably several during the day.) his plan was just to keep messing with him, toying with him until he decided to make a big heist, right up until toying with him became mei actually starting to like him.
thus his secretary. ugh.
mei's squawking can be heard on the other end of the intercom, he's not my--ugh, whatever, send him in! before mei actually sits back in his chair and tries to pretend he was only doing his work. his cheeks are flushed, and he doesn't look up from his laptop. ] What did you tell her?
[ nothing...they go on dates at least three times a week..... ]
[ Even if he's tired, and irritated with Mei, Itsuki can't help the way he smiles when he hears him squawking over the intercom. He thinks he can actually hear him a little through the doors to his office. But the secretary gives him a sly look, and he quickly bows to her as she buzzes him in, his ears red around the edges.
Right, he has work to be doing.
But he can't help the pang in his chest at the sight of Mei, flushed and ruffled. Despite what he's put together, he still treasures his time with Mei, and what they have, even if he's a fool for it. There's a sinking suspicion underneath that warm, floaty feeling that haunts him, one that sounds a little like his mother when she's disappointed with him. What the hell is he doing, sleeping with a thief? He's a criminal.
Here he is, approaching his desk anyways, thinking about how Mei's slowly started to open up further around him. Regardless of his damn thefts. ]
Nothing, Mei-san. [ Hat in one hand against his chest, he brings the other up to rub at his tired eyes. There's darker rings under them, these days. Despite the fact they retrieve the stolen goods - or, more like, Mei returns them - Itsuki is still constantly sent out to try and track him down before he has a chance to conduct the robberies. He knows he could solve this easy as anything if he just turned him in. He knows where Mei sleeps. He knows where he works.
But he doesn't. Instead, he tries to safeguard against his thefts, futile as it is.
His hand drops, and he refocuses on Mei. ] I came to tell you to clear your schedule.
[ honestly, mei's secretary is such a gossip! he would fire her!! except not, because not only is she efficient, but she's cute, so there's no way he's going to do that. he's just flustered, and it's only itsuki also looking a little flustered that keeps him from squawking about it. jeez.
he's not hiding behind his computer, but he's also definitely not looking at itsuki, so he misses the tired rub of his eyes. if itsuki's exhausted, mei's practically perky--he runs his thefts because he's bored, and a good heist usually leaves him energetic the next morning. this is no exception, and it's undeniable that the life he lives isn't really healthy. a couple cups of black coffee, a pill, and he's wide awake and back to work, every single day. it's hard being a billionaire by day, thief by night, and he could quit and--
well, he's thought about it. not often. but the other night, as he'd slipped back into bed with itsuki knowing his pager was going to go off just seconds after he got into bed, he'd thought about quitting. about how tired he sounded when he woke up, about how mei couldn't convince him back into bed (and he's very convincing.) he has a feeling that itsuki knows what's going on, but mei's own hubris isn't going to let him get anywhere near stopping the inevitable train wreck from happening.
he's typing away on his computer, pretending not to be embarrassed, when itsuki speaks up the second time, and it takes mei a second to process. he lifts his head and narrows his bright blue eyes, scrutinizing him. ] Excuse me?
[ mei doesn't just clear his schedule for just anyone...or anything. this better be good. ]
happy birthday have ur craving quenched
