[ Shouto figures he probably shouldn't be running off to work on trade routes, furthering his training there rather than at home under the press of his father's thumb, but honestly? He doesn't give a damn at this point. His disavowal isn't exactly a secret, so the moment he steps foot on the ship he feels quiet relief wash over him.
The sailors he spends his time with tell him stories, teach him things, show him the world from a different viewpoint than the one he's used to. He thinks the idea of merfolk and other sea creatures is a little farfetched, and he tells them as much, but they reassure him that he'll find out before too long that a man sees quite a bit out on the open waters.
He didn't actually expect them to be right.
Later, Shouto won't be able to recall how he wound up in the water. The storm rallies against the ship, and one moment he was on the deck, battening down, and the next he was in the water. While he might be a proficient swimmer, it doesn't do much in the storm.
If it weren't for one of the very things he didn't believe in, he'd probably be dead, drowned and at the bottom of the ocean or dashed against something. At first, it's like Izuku was too late, that there's not anything he can do.
But he stirs, and when he wakes up, he... realizes that he wakes up, coughing and trying to shift up onto his elbow, away from the person over him, so that he can hack a lungful of water out, gagging on the salt of it. ]
[Izuku takes a deep, relieved sigh once two-toned hair is breathing. Reasonably he knows he should dive into the water straight away, make the man think it was just the oceans being merciful.
But he can't make himself go, he's too curious and too relieved. His tail flattens against the beach now that he doesn't need to worry about this man's potential death.]
[ Rubbing at his throat as he finishes coughing, Shouto squeezes his eyes shut and groans a little. He feels like he got battered around against some rocks - which he knows isn't likely, considering he's alive - and it takes him a moment to really register that he's being spoken to.
But when it does, he turns, slumping his weight onto both elbows now so he can face the stranger. He blinks open mismatched eyes, bleary, and focuses on him. ]
[His tail twitches as he fidgets with his hands, looking away from Todoroki and at the ocean. It takes him a few moments to respond- like he's debating if he should just go right back into the ocean or continue talking.
He looks back at Todoroki, what pretty eyes- he's never seen anything like them on anybody else. It's not his first time rescuing a sailor, but it is his first time hanging around.]
Um... You fell off of your boat. During the storm.
