Yup!! [ of course he did is exactly right. it was totally a great surprise. hinata misses out on kageyama's steadying gesture, mostly because he doesn't actually know what he's doing that for, and allows kageyama to drag him inside without any struggle. hinata's very obviously pleased with himself, because he thinks he's super clever and also because he's here. it's not like he doesn't like his family--quite the opposite, hinata loves his family more than (almost) everything (not more than quidditch). rather, it's that he knows kageyama was alone, and that he knows he wants to spend time with him. if hinata's feeling particularly good or sappy he can maybe quietly admit to himself that kageyama is one of his best friends in the whole world. even if they argue all the time, hinata's life feels like it has a huge, gaping hole in it if kageyama's not there beside him.
but it's different than it is with kenma. he doesn't know why, or how, but just that it is.
as he gets tugged inside, hinata's too busy beaming to notice kageyama's second long smile, preening a little bit. you should have seen the look on your face is what he wants to come out of his mouth, but what comes out instead was-- ] I missed you!
[ hinata pauses and turns red at the ears, abruptly backtracking and trying to cover for himself. ] I mean--puhhh, playing quidditch with you! And racing you all the time, that's all! It feels weird not to go to practice with you every day, and I'm not allowed to fly at home so I'm dying, can you even imagine that--
[ he's gonna keep babbling, you might want to cut him off. . . ]
[ It's no real surprise that Hinata is so pleased with himself, nor that he went and... probably got one from someone, actually. Because he can't really see him making the portkey himself, so either an older schoolmate did it or they pointed him in the right direction to get one.
If he's being honest with himself, it's really nice that someone came to see him. Kageyama knows that he has teammates and people who he could call his friends, especially in his house - so long as you ignore the fact that Oikawa exists - but none of them really feel like the type that would go out of their way to visit him. And he knows why that is, knows that he's awkward with people and often difficult to get along with, though obviously that doesn't stop Hinata.
Not that much could even stand in the way of Hinata.
Except maybe Tobio putting his hand over his mouth to stop his babbling. (As he disregards his own flustered response to that, heart twisting into knots.) ]
Did you bring your broom, or are we gonna have to see if there's another one in the shed for you to use?
Mmmoo, mmfthfthft. [ he tries to talk with kageyama's hand over his mouth before hinata gives up and licks his hand to make him let go, because he's actually me a four year old, and swiftly dodges under the hand that comes to smear it in his face afterwards, because he knows this song and dance way too well. ]
I got it!! I used that enchanted bag Sugawara-san gave me. [ brightly, he digs around in the bag over his shoulder, setting it down on the ground before feeling around in it to dig out his broom, which takes him sitting on the floor and getting back up onto his tiptoes in order to pull it all the way out of his bag, because life is hard when you're 5'4". as he pulls the broom out he just looks entirely too pleased with himself, beaming, all energetic, mirthful sunshine as he considers the merits of flying with kageyama. the only problem is that it is getting sort of dark--they won't be able to stay out long--but. well, hinata would probably play at midnight if it meant he got the chance to fly around and try and be faster than his teammate for a little while longer.
he gives a little bobble as he holds out his beat up old broom, giving it a little wiggle. ] Hope you're ready to get beat!!
[ just like that, he's here, infiltrating this quiet space and filling it up with his own strange brand of hinata shouyou sunshine, the kind of thing that tends to make even the darkest people just a little bit brighter. he really did, though, miss this. he missed it a lot. he missed their competitions over literally everything and he missed kageyama's dumb faces and his bad high fives and terrifying smiles and he just. really missed kageyama. a lot. it's really, really hard for him to be away from him when they see each other literally every day, he thinks. maybe.
it's all embarrassing; his ears are still tinted red, even as flying and practicing quickly takes precedence over feelings. (as he's learned in the past, that doesn't in fact make them go away.) ]
[ A sharp, loud argh!! leaves him as he feels the wet press of tongue against his palm, and Kageyama swats his hand around in the air where Hinata's face originally was. He settles for rubbing it off on his shirt at his shoulder, because at least it's on Hinata and not him, whatever.
There's the temptation to push him over even when he's sat down on the floor to get his broom out, but instead he just watches him, remembering the enchanted bags that Sugawara had been working on at one point or another. They're pretty useful, to be honest, because there's so much they have to carry around at school. Outside of it? Who knows what they'll lose at the bottom of it. A broom seems a pretty realistic bet, when it comes to someone like Hinata.
But he waits patiently for the shorter boy to finagle it out, snorting rudely at the drastic height struggle between wizard and broom. ]
Stupid, there's no way you can beat me. Especially not here where you don't know anything about the place when you're on a broom.
[ Things are a lot easier when they're egging each other on. Everything about their bickering helps to distract from how codependent they are, because there's no denying the fact they are incredibly, incredibly codependent. Hinata is the bright energy that keeps him going when he's feeling sullen or grouchy, or is just... there. And it's hard to think of when he wasn't there. Especially with how easy it is to just be with him, even when they yell at each other, and ignore everyone else. ]
Can too!! [ hinata falls straight for that play because he is going to compete with kageyama no matter what it is. who can eat more food at breakfast? yep. who can fly faster? you bet. who can make it to the potions class in the dungeon first? absolutely.
(also stop laughing at him you rude piece of shit)
he waves his broom around for emphasis, even, clutching his other fist in front of him, all kinds of fired up with the threat of the challenge. what else is new, honestly. ] You're all talk, Kageyama!! I'm gonna fly circles around you!!
[ honestly, though, kageyama probably has a point. they'll keep this up for literal hours, until it's so dark outside he can't see two feet in front of his face, and keep racing over and over and over until either they end up even or somebody wins more...or they're both too exhausted to stay on their brooms. that seems natural.
it doesn't occur to hinata that he doesn't have anything in his bottomless bag but his gear and a milk box, but, you know, he'll figure that out later when it's time for bed. for now, he grabs his broom and pretty much skips out the door, yelling over his shoulder-- ] Eat my dust!!
[ even though he has...no idea where he's going... it's fine don't worry about it. ]
Yeah, right! [ It's pretty easy for him to go from riling Hinata up to distract him (and himself) to... Kageyama basically falling prey to his own scheme. Not like this doesn't happen constantly. Usually all it takes is one comment and they're both off like a shot, shouting at each other - even across the Great Hall - and trying to beat the other into the dirt. ]
More like you're gonna fly circles around your own butt.
[ Or he's gonna wind up ass over end, either or. Something that's bound to happen: that. But they have wizarding first aid kits laying around everywhere just for occasions like this, since his mom is never around for when he's getting into his own kinds of trouble. Hinata means ten times the trouble, because of what he'll get himself into and what he'll get Kageyama into. Again, nothing new.
Exasperated and frustrated expression in place, he marches off after him, only pausing to grab his broom up again before he goes along. He's pretty sure that the idiot is going to get himself lost on the property, at this rate. He's bound and determined most of the time to get himself into trouble, so why not this, too? ]
You don't even know where you're going!
[ Never going to stop laughing at him, you dumb piece of shit. ]
Nope, but I'm gonna get there first!! [ since when has hinata ever let not knowing something bother him? the answer is never or else he'd be an even worse student than he already is. he throws a grin over his shoulder at tobio, bright and competitive and so, so happy, and puts on a burst of extra speed before he kicks his right leg over his broom and pushes off into the sky. the first brush of air through his spikes feels like heaven. it's been so long since he's been able to fly--half the summer he's spent at home--that the wind in his face is paradise, and he grabs on tight to his broom to do a flip with a joyous, loud whoop, shirt over his head for a second as he just hangs there, upside down and clearly having the best time of his life.
okay, so, yeah. he's happy about a lot of things. quidditch takes up 98% of the space in hinata's brain, but he's pretty damn excited to be hanging out with kageyama again, too. only now, he can say that the pounding of his heart in his twist is for the game and not for the fact that he hasn't seen his friend in two months. this is going to turn into the perfect weekend (which is how long he'd told his mom he'd be staying, but he might beg for more if they get to race all the time!!) and hinata's already really, stupidly excited about it.
his grin is stretched so wide on his face that his cheeks are starting to hurt, and hinata turns back around to where kageyama has surely caught up with him by now, kicking both of his feet up and down on his broom like an excited child as they hover in the air. ]
Okay, so, now that I won, where are we going? I wanna race!
[ It's only when Hinata's run off and kicked into the air that Kageyama lets his expression reflect how he's feeling: an unbridled kind of joy at the fact that his best friend is here. He doesn't know how long he'll be here, but he doesn't care. It's a break in the monotony of being alone for the summer, since he also doesn't know how long his mother is going to be gone, and Hinata always ensures that nothing will be boring. It's just a matter of him, you know, existing. Sure, they're bound to get in trouble or hurt themselves, especially when it comes to competing, but it's...
It's whatever.
So he smiles wide, albeit close-lipped, and springs off after him and into the air in an easy, practiced movement. He could get a quaffle from the shed, but he doesn't really care about that right now. He just cares about the rush of air as he follows after Shouyou, the idiot, jetting into the air to catch him. The orange blur might be the seeker of their team, but that doesn't mean that Kageyama won't be able to catch him before too long.
(Truth be told, he'll always be able to catch him, but he won't admit to that any time soon.)
Leaning back on his broomstick once he catches up and resettles his expression into aloofness, he raises his arms and balances, stretching his shoulders - but then rolls his eyes at his claim that he won. ]
I can show you the whole property and we can make a route for a race.
Deal!!! [ hinata is obviously thrilled at this suggestion. it means they don't get to start practicing right away, sure, but flying around doesn't sound bad at all either. with the wind in his hair and the ground hundreds of feet away, hinata feels sort of at home at the moment, and tobio on a broom beside him is definitely helping with that. he was embarrassed to admit it earlier, but, god--hinata missed him. a lot. it was really weird to look to his right and not have his overly tall ""friend"" around to share looks with or steal food from.
again, though, it would practically take a cruciatus curse to get him to honestly admit to that, so he'll just stick with the sports.
hinata slows down in his goofing off to let kageyama lead the way, then, making a wide gesture with his arms. if it was up to him, he'd just fly until they both collapsed, but this is a good idea. ] You've got a really big house, Kageyama. And there's nobody around ever? No wonder you're so grumpy all the time!
[ For as much as he loves to race Hinata, and to compete, and to just dick off with him whenever they have the free time, until they're both close to collapsing... well, Kageyama figures that this is good, too. It lets them get settled back into their paces, though it never feels like they've been apart long when they see each other again. It's just like nothing has ever changed each time. But when they're apart? It's awful. Separation anxiety is not something he ever expected to feel, but he's pretty sure that's what this is.
Looking down and not seeing Hinata there? Is kind of difficult to deal with on a daily basis, and tells him just how much time they spend together at school.
But he pushes that thought aside, because, one, he'll never admit to it; two, Hinata is there now. So he just shakes his head at the enthusiasm, his default reaction now instead of confusion or immediate disdain, and leads the way through the skies over the house and everything that has the Kageyama name on it.
Although, Tobio does almost fall off his broom with how blunt that comment was, Jesus. He treads sort of reluctantly through that topic. ] Only child, and mom's a cursebreaker, so. She's gone a lot throughout the year, gets called away for important tombs and sites, even for holidays.
[ No comment about dad, or about how he stays at Hogwarts for Christmas and doesn't do anything except practice. ]
Uohh, cool, a cursebreaker... you should try to be as awesome as your mom sometime! [ hinata grins in kageyama's direction, flying beside him easily--admittedly, he brings his broom back down to dodge the swipe at his head that will come a second later, but. hinata can't help but think that that's...kind of sad. suddenly, kageyama's nickname of 'the king' seems all the more fitting, because he basically lives in a big tower all alone.
huh.
that makes hinata feel sort of bad. he ends up dodging back close to him after he's avoided the initial death-head-squeeze and leans forward on his broom, looking out at the landscape for a moment but focusing mostly on his dumb teammmate. ] Do you know when she's coming back? Cause...if it's not for a while, you should come and visit me and my family! I mean, I have a little sister and she gets into everything, so it's probably waaaaaaaay different than what you're used to, and we definitely can't fly or anything 'cause all my neighbors are muggles, but... [ he trails off, a little lamely, shrugging off his embarrassment. ] If you wanna, you can, I guess.
[ As predicted, Kageyama makes a grab for Hinata, growling at him as he dodges away. But instead of trying to chase after him, he finds his balance again so that he doesn't actually fall off his broom. This high up, he'd probably get hurt - not as badly as he would during a match, but enough that it'd be bad. Although, that'd be a lot better than admitting that, yeah, he's lonely in that big tower that he calls home. It doesn't even look like most wizarding homes do, cluttered and full of life because of enchantments.
So he doesn't dwell on it, whenever he can manage it.
Eying Hinata as he comes close again, he leans his weight forward onto his hands, holding tight to the handle of his broomstick. That's... a really good question to be entirely honest. ] No. I dunno, her schedules are weird and depend on the curses.
[ But when he trails off, Kageyama goes to continue, not sure if he's reassuring or agreeing or what. Or even who it's for, him or Hinata. Whatever, he kind of gets this stupid, warm, fuzzy feeling in his stomach with the offer. ] But, I mean, I guess I could. I've never been to a muggle neighborhood, it must be boring, having the flight restrictions.
UGH, you have no idea! [ hinata exclaims, throwing his arms in the air and then slumping forward into his broom. he's thankful for the distraction because it felt like things got heavy for a second there. hinata's attention span is short and he'll take the chance to complain about things for a little bit, but even he can't stop the weird, squirmy warm feeling in his chest that makes him want to do a loop on his broom. this has been happening more and more lately around kageyama, and it's not only confusing, but it's kind of scary, too. hinata doesn't understand it and it mostly makes him wants to run his hands through his hair and yell and maybe kiss him afterwards.
eeyuck.
shaking his head furiously, he goes back to complaining before that thought gets anywhere more embarrassing than it already is. ] I mean it's like--flying just makes me feel so fuwahh, you know?! And I can't even do it! It's like I'm a bird and somebody broke me!! How lame is that!!!
But--[ he snaps his fingers, because he wants to hurry and save this so that kageyama doesn't just not come over because he really, really, really wants kageyama to come over. ] But! We can still practice passes, and my sister plays this really awesome, fun muggle sport that I used to play when I was younger that we can play, too, I bet you'd be really good at it! And my mom can make pork curry! She makes the best pork curry ever, the kind with the egg on top and everything!
[ There, that's kind of a return to normal. Tobio is a little relieved for it, because, really. Being antagonistic with Hinata is the norm, not... this. Or, at least, it's supposed to be the norm. Yet it's been happening more and more in recent months, ever since they first met and started spending so much time together. Best friends? Absolutely, despite how common it is to see them yelling at one another. But there's something more, and he fights to pretend that there isn't, because it just complicates things and winds up being more terrifying than he cares to admit to.
So he keeps his eyes focused on the horizon for as long as he can. It doesn't last very long, like Hinata draws his eye frequently, and Kageyama rolls his head a bit as he looks over at him.
When did he get so good at translating Hinata's sound effects? ] Yeah, fuwahh. [ He says it agreeably, if more subdued than Hinata's exclamation.
But then he blinks, once, twice, slowly. He's never heard him talk about his mom making curry before, but he doesn't want to ask if that's true, and instead he just shifts his weight on his broom, a reserved kind of excitement. He does want to go to the Hinata household, but... thinking about it, about meeting his family and his little sister, about spending time alone with Hinata in his own house after they've stayed here for a bit... ]
We could find a quidditch match, or a muggle one. It might give us some ideas for when we go back to school, and we could... take your sister, maybe. If she wanted to go.
Uohh!! That's a great idea!!! [ hinata's eyes get big and bright as he considers it, grabbing onto his broom tight with both hands like he needs somewhere to funnel his excitement (he does) and rattling on it a little bit. a pro quidditch match...!!! ] I've never been to a pro match before! Neither has Natsu! Do you think it's okay if she's not a witch yet? I know she's gonna be one!!
[ hinata doesn't actually know that, but his belief in his baby sister is so strong that if he could will it to happen, he most certainly would. he's off to the races now, excitedly gesturing at everything and moving around so much his broom starts to bounce. ] Yeah...yeah, that'd be so awesome! And we could go to a volleyball match because they're sooo fun and they like, fly without brooms, it's crazy!! The players jump in the air all whoosh and stuff!! We should definitely do it!!!!
[ well he's still wiggling around, he pauses, though. ] Oh, but, not until Monday. Cause that's how long I said I was staying here! I'll send my owl over to let her know you're coming tonight, though!!
[ not only did he invite himself over but he definitely did it for three whole days. he just...wanted to be thorough. that's all. really. ]
[ Kageyama actually preens a little, privately, somewhat pleased with himself for the suggestion. He's also sort of pleased with the response Hinata gives him, thinking about how he can get tickets to a match, find a way to make sure that Hinata's little sister can come without problems. As an only child, he doesn't know what that's like, but he does know what it feels like to be left out of things. Yeah, he's going to want to just spend time with her brother, but... well, he's not going to leave Natsu out, either. Not with how Hinata talks about her all the time. ] I've been to a couple. It's not really that weird to bring pre-Hogwarts kids to them, you just kind of have to keep a close eye on them. And we'd have to register our tickets as minors, so that there's someone that's chaperone to us, if your parents didn't go.
[ His mother's taken him a couple times, but more often than not he's had a designated adult to keep an eye on him at the matches.
But he's not going to think about that. Instead, he's going to nod along with the talk of a volleyball match, interested in the muggle sport but a little distracted from it by Hinata's admission. Again, he winds up staring at him, but he's not... ]
Sure, that's fine. [ He's not annoyed. If it were that first year of knowing one another? Absolutely. But this is good, even if it makes a knot form in his stomach. ]

[ he trails off, a little lamely, shrugging off his embarrassment. ] If you wanna, you can, I guess.

I've never been to a muggle neighborhood, it must be boring, having the flight restrictions.

eeyuck.
shaking his head furiously, he goes back to complaining before that thought gets anywhere more embarrassing than it already is.

[ not only did he invite himself over but he definitely did it for three whole days. he just...wanted to be thorough. that's all. really. ]
