[ Minji blinks, once. And then again. She looks at Newt where she's seated, wedged eyebrows raised in an absent kind of surprise. It's not horror, or anything negative, just a neutral sort of shock that gives way to obviousness. Of course she'd want to marry Allie, who joined their crew early on, who raised Newt out of the rut she'd lived in for so long. The captain remembers those days, when she was healing a shatter in her leg that reflected a shatter in her soul.
It'd only started healing when Alberta came aboard.
Moving to sit up, a slow grin spreads across her face. She's thought about retiring - she could do it, she could pass her legacy on to someone else and live in paradise with Tessa - and she's known that eventually Newt and Allie would want to tie the knot. ]
Seriously? Does she know? Have you both been planning it or are you going to surprise her?
[ the questions startle newt--they shouldn't, really, because it's minji--but she blushes and ducks her head, hiding her flustered face behind a little bit of a laugh. ] Bloody hell. Tess is startin' to wear off on you.
[ but it feels like relief in a nice way, and her shoulders slump, even as her heart thumps loudly against her ribcage, enough that she'd be shocked if minji couldn't hear it. of course she can talk about this--why would she think anything otherwise? minji is newt's best friend, so of course she was the first person she turned to.
she hasn't even told allie yet. which is kind of the problem.
newt scratches the back of her neck. ] Well...no. Not yet. I was gonna--surprise her, I guess. [ she turns a little pinker, looks away. ] 's not like she's gonna say no.
Slim it, you, you two have been together ever since we got this ship! [ Minji bounces in her seat like a child, grinning even more at her. This is a thrilling thing, she's genuinely excited for her, genuinely happy that she's found someone to hold onto. For as much as she hates thinking about it, she's known for a long time that she's never been enough to keep Newt here and she never would be. Not by herself. Newt's sadness has always been far too powerful.
Allie was a godsend. She's never been more grateful for someone in her life. Newt isn't cured - never will be - but she's got someone to help her through it. ]
Hell no she's not gonna say no! And did you have anything in mind, or are we gonna have to put something together?
[ minji's so excited it's almost infectious, and newt can't help it--she grins, the apples of her cheeks brightening up as she drops her hands from the back of her neck, picking at a loose thread on her sweater as she talks about it. newt loves allie. that is an absolute and wonderful fact. she wasn't sure what she'd been expecting when the stoic navigator came onto the ship, but from the first moment they met, she'd felt a spark with allie that she never really felt with anyone before. she was brave and strong and so unbelievably kind, and from late nights sneaking into her section of the sleeper quarters downstairs (and falling out of the hammock at four in the morning, to minji's absolute hysterical laughter) to early mornings pressing her face into her pretty dark curls and begging not to get out of bed. newt loves allie so much she doesn't know what to do with it somedays.
so it's kind of nice to open up about it to minji, to talk about it. she's a little shy because neither of them are forward with their relationship (unlike other people) but she's willing to try. newt reaches into the pockets of her sweater and pulls out a little box, rolling it over her fingers. ] Nicked it off a ship a year or so ago. Haven't really thought beyond that, though.
[ she opens the box, offers it forward to her. ] Think she'll like it?
[ Honestly, a part of Minji wants to just kiss Newt. She's so happy, more light, more alive, with Allie in her life. Hell, she could kiss the both of them, she's so thrilled with this. And the selfish part of her is positively thrilled with the fact she's their captain - she gets to marry them. Sure, the rest of the world would ignore their marriage, for various reasons, but the rest of the world doesn't matter.
It's just their little family, people who came together through circumstance after circumstance. And at the head are Minji and Newt, Allie, even Tessa now. If Minji can do this for Newt, who looks at Allie like she's the sun and gets the same look in return, gets her hair done up in pretty curls and braids every morning because Allie puts off getting out of bed to take care of her first thing so that she starts off on the right foot, well. There's a reason she decided to give them their own quarters, instead of keeping them in the shared ones, and it wasn't just privacy. She wants them happy. ]
Well, the real question is whether you want to be subtle and quiet or if you want to announce it to the whole world. [ She holds her hand out, making grabby fingers. ]
