[ While Toothless could expend energy unfreezing the water, he's more inclined to let Hiccup gather up fish for him. Especially with how cold it's been in recent months, and he's feeling so lethargic in comparison to the warmer weeks they occasionally get to live through. He keeps in motion, though, his tail swaying behind him as he walks and his wings tucked in close.
As he finagles his way into the house, nosing and pawing until he can come inside, he flicks the tip of his half-fin and shuts the door behind him. It's only there that he shakes himself out, at least, snow going everywhere at the entryway before he comes ambling over to where Hiccup is seated.
He churrs softly at him, shuffling his wings into a comfortable position so that he can flop over behind him, curling around his back. ]
[Hiccup lifts his head where he'd been resting his chin in one hand, pausing to let his numb fingers warm back up. With a grin he reaches over to scratch Toothless just under his jaw.]
Mornin' bud. You ready for breakfast? ...whenever it's- ...not frozen solid at least.
[Even as he says this, a puddle of water has begun collecting beneath the wicker basket.]
[ Toothless lets out a rumbling purr at the scratch, head tilting to give Hiccup better reach as his tail curls to settle in front of his friend. The fins atop his head perk at the question, though, and his head swivels a little towards where the basket is settled.
With a soft snort, he nudges one of his massive paws at it. He's not going to try and eat any of the fish while they're still cold-- he learned about that the hard way when he had a fish stuck to his tongue. ]
[He watches Toothless for a minute before sitting up a bit, grabbing a stick he'd gotten from outside- which is nearly as frozen as the fish inside the basket.]
These have been thawing for a while- ..lemme check-
[Grabbing the handle, he tips the basket over until he can jab the stick blindly inside, pulling out two fish speared against each other on the end. They're not in blocks anymore, but still very stiff and icy. So to fix that, he pushes the basket back near the fire with his good foot before holding the stick near the flames.]
How do you like your fish Toothless? Rare, or well-done?
[He's joking, obviously- he highly doubts the dragon really cares.]
[ Observing with interest, he pulls his foreleg back towards his body and crosses them both at the wrist. One fin cocks sideways with the question, and a rumbling trill escapes him in answer. Of course he doesn't care, but he makes a show of almost looking thoughtful about it, head tilting as his wings shift at his back in an almost-shrug.
Joking, in his own way, as he's started to learn since dragon and viking began working together.
The next trill that escapes him is both interested and content, as his bright eyes flick from the human to the fire and back. Despite wanting his breakfast now, though, he's rather well behaved about it. ]
[Hiccup catches that look in the Nightfury's eye, and he has to hold back a chuckle at it. He holds the fish over the flames just long enough to melt the rest of the ice and make them warm enough to eat- luke-warm really, at best.
Then he pulls them both off the end and offers the fish to Toothless, sighing.]
Sorry it's taking so long- probably not as good as fresh fish, but hey- it's better than nothing, right?
[ An agreeable noise leaves him, and Toothless cranes in to take the fish from his hand, teeth visible as he snaps them up. He's done it enough times that he doesn't worry about catching Hiccup's fingers in the act, and instead immediately goes about positioning them in his mouth with his forked tongue so that he can tip his head back and swallow them down.
Not the most lovely sight in the morning, but Berk has seen worse.
Teeth retracting again, he licks at his chops like a sated dog before he shows his gums. ]
[Chuckling softly, the viking stabs the stick into the basket again to get some more fish to warm up.]
They're good, huh? ...At least they're...somewhat fresh. Since they're on ice and all..
[The sun's coming up- so he's sure the others are out and about by now. When the sun barely gets a chance to warm the island during these months, everyone generally takes as much opportunity as they can to do the work that needs to be done when the temperature isn't completely ridiculous.
But what is Hiccup stuck doing? ..Staying inside mostly, as usual. Replacement legs aren't really made for walking in the snow.]
[ At least. It's better than trying to go fishing for himself, especially with his half-fin. Shifting to get more comfortable as Hiccup goes about warming up more fish, he lifts his tail up and settles it across the viking's metallic foot, despite the chill that sticks to it still. Warming it is the least he can do while his friend warms his food.
And though he would be out there with the rest of the island, working off energy, Toothless is perfectly content to stay indoors for the meantime. There's times where a quiet moment is more than enough, especially when it's with just them. ]
[Hiccup can't help but smile a little at that. He'd never meant to hurt Toothless like he had, leaving him crippled with a missing fin... and yet, now they were inseperable. Considering he was...kinda missing something too, they really depended on each other now.
Holding the stick with one hand, he reaches back to pet Toothless again, idly running his fingers down the top of his head to the end of his nose.]
..So what'cha wanna do today buddy? ....Got anything special planned?
[ They were definitely a pair, to say the least. But Toothless was all right with where things were, because now it really did leave them inseparable. It wasn't conventional in the least bit, but much about Berk wasn't even before the union of viking and dragon. So he's content where he is, with his human and his life as it is.
Head bowing towards his hand, his ear fins relax back and he closes his eyes with the touch, nose wriggling a little as his fingers come to it. A purr leaves him again, even as his wings shift in silent answer. It might be cold out, but a bit of a flight won't hurt as long as they don't stay out forever. ]
[ Eyes opening again, he leans in to take the fish from him, snapping them up with a happy churring building at the back of his throat as he does. Warmed by the fire, eating a good breakfast, and laying around before a flight with Hiccup? A good start to the morning.
Once he's downed the next batch of fish, he shakes his head out a little at the mention of snow. There's nothing on him, of course, but he can agree. They need to spread their wings, literal and figurative, sometime soon. Maybe Hiccup should talk to his winter friend about laying off for a while. ]
[Yeah, he might wanna get on that. Hiccup's happy to see he and the dragon are both on the same page, so with a heavy sigh he stands, holding a hand against Toothless' side for support.]

[He turns to grab some more fish from the stick, holding them out for Toothless to eat.]
Haven't had a good flight lately with all the snow...feels like it's been forever. We both could do for some fresh air.
