PLAY ALL THE AUs

[Nepeta always considered herself a brave person. She had had to be ever since the...incident that happened two years ago, which had forced her to not only have to learn to take care of herself, but her mother as well. Sure strange things had always happened around her, but that was the first time she had ever had any actual known encounter with anything magical, and she had hoped it would be her last. It was no surprise then that she had been shocked to learn that he herself was a witch, and it had taken a lot of convincing, arguing, and bargaining to find a way for her to finally agree to come to this school.

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy. It had taken her quite a while to believe it wasn't some sort of crazy hoax, but she had finally believed when she had been escorted to Diagon Alley in London. Now here she was, an eleven year old girl going off into another country--another world practically on her own. She felt scared, alone, and well...alien. Somehow she still expected this would all turn out to be a big mistake so while she was typically a very friendly and outgoing girl she had been quick to find an empty compartment on the train to hole herself up in.

It was going to be a long train ride.]

[Blinks at some more and goes to ask her what she means but then it kind of hits him and his eyebrows go up. Oh! She must have been a muggleborn! He ...didn't know very many of those. Of course Dad told him about it and how he should treat them with just as much respect as a full-blooded wizard or witch because that was the gentlemanly thing to do. His Dad was all about being a gentleman.]

Oh. Um, haha. No, not really. I've always known that I would come here, actually. Me Dad's a wizard and all.

...huh.

So this magic thing is genetic? [Did that mean one of her parents had been a witch or wizard? Why had they never said anything?]

Yep! So someone in your family must be a wizard! or a witch.

[It couldn't be mom. She was sure of that. Not dad either, she was sure that they at least would have said something. She didn't really know of any other relatives she had. Both had been single children, and her grandparents...well she didn't really know anything about them, if they were even still alive.]

So do you know a lot about this school?

Sure. It's huge and inside this big castle. We go there for seven years and after that we're officially wizards! My Dad said its a lot of fun.

[He said it so candidly, as if it no big deal]

But what does that mean? To be a wizard.

Uhm. [Wow, how do you answer a question like that? You just are, right?]

I dunno. It means you can use your wand outside of school without getting into loads of trouble? Or, I guess it means you can go on and do awesome wizard things like be an Auror.

What's an Auror?

[Face lights up.]

Oh man, Aurors are like, the coolest wizards ever. They're a special force of magical officers that work for the ministry. Catching bad guys, helping people, that sort of thing.

Oh! So sorta like the...wizard police? [Nepeta is pinged. Nepeta is very pinged]

Yeah! But they are kind of a super special team.

[....hmmmm.]

So special in that...they only go after certain bad people? Or?

Yeah, and everything they do is pretty much top secret. I bet they get to fight dragons too.

[This was a tidbit of information she was going to keep in mind.]

Dragons?? They exist? Really?

Uh huh! I've even seen one! Sort of. From really far away. They're really dangerous, you know, so I couldn't stick around long.

That makes sense. [If they are anything like the stories.]

...but hey. Wait. If dragon exists why hasn't anyone noticed them? I mean unless I'm missing something most people think witches and dragons n' stuff don't really exist, right?

That's right. There's a law that says muggles-er, that would be normal folk, can't learn about us. It's so the wizarding world can live in peace and no one bothers us.

[Oh god more terms. Muggle. Auror. Remember them. There was something about this separation thing that bugged her a bit, but she couldn't quite place her hand on it. Oh well, she'd ruminate on it later.]

I'm Nepeta by the way. It's nice to meet you.

John! It's nice to meet you!

So tell me about the muggle world! Have you ever been in one of those tiny trains that they all zoom about in? I think they're called Otto-mobiles?

Automobiles? Wizards don't use them? Yea, I have been in them. Not a lot--I usually just walk where I need to. Or in some cases use a horse, but I got to ride in one when I went into the city.

[It was kind of hard knowing what to talk about as far as differences went, when she didn't know what the Wizard world was like]

I mostly grew up in the country way out in Spain. A real small village [though it couldn't really be called even that] called El Pais. So mostly I just did lots of farming, though I got to play with the other kids whenever I had free time. We don't use a lot of electronics there. Just, you know, whatever we could find to pass the time.

Ohh, you're all the way from Spain! That's so far away! How neat.

But no, we don't use otto-mobiles. We can fly! Or if its too far away, we can use things like floo powder or apparition. Isn't that how you got to London?

[MORE STRANGE WORDS]

Well. I did fly. On a plane.

Plane?

It's kinda like...a giant automobile with wings. Here lemme-- [She reached up above her seat to pull down her tiny trunk and dig through it, pulling out a sketchbook and pencil. Forget quills, she still had no idea how to use those.

She began to sketch and ten turn around to show John a rather sloppy picture of a plane]

They have lots of seats like trains and people take them to go to different places!

So it's like a flying train! That is cool.

[So fascinated.]

Yup! Pretty much. What about this...floo powder you mentioned?

Oh, you can travel through fire places!

....fire places?

Fire places.

[ Dave had ambled to the door to the compartment around the plane discussion, Cheezburger perched on his shoulder with his fluffy tail tucked underneath his chin, but had decided to remain silent for a moment.

Actually, he really had no idea why he even spoke up in the first place. But this was the first compartment he discovered that wasn't full. ]

[Oh! New person. Now that she had already met one person, Nepeta was already eager to meet more.]

How does that work? I mean, isn't there a risk of. You know. Getting burned? [Nepeta and fire were not friends]

[ Considering the two of them for a moment, Dave moved into the compartment properly so as not to block the doorway. His cat shifted, curious about the new people as well. ]

The powder basically--magically--renders the fireplace's flames harmless. So you can step right into the fire without a care in the world, 'n then you shout your destination.

[Oh hey, someone new. John looked up with more bright curiosity. Wow he had a funny accent. Was he American? What was he doing at Hogwarts?]

Yeah, what he said.

Hello!

I see. [Hum. It still sounded fishy to her. Nepeta was not going to use Floo Powder anytime soon. If ever.

She smiled and nodded at him as well.]

I'm Nepeta. And this is John. What's your name?

[ Letting Cheezburger clamber around on his shoulders some more, he extended his arm to allow the cat to actually walk along it and closer to the other two kids. ]

Strider. Dave Strider-- [ Mrrp! ] --and Cheezburger.

...Strider! I know that name!
